English Literature is more than just the development of our reading and writing. It also explores a lot of complex themes and understanding an author’s vision, their thought process and more. This is a very important subject for pupils to pick up, and whether they go on to study it at A Level or just explore it at a lower level, they will learn heaps of knowledge in their time on this subject.

In this guide from an independent school in Buckingham, we take a look at how important English Literature is in education.

It shows your child how different stories are made

Writing more developed novels takes time and your child will learn a lot more about how they’re written and put together. It will help your child pick up new concepts of how stories are made beyond the picture books of yesterday, while also helping your child pick up new words and vocabulary.

Literature gives your child a broader perspective of how stories can be put together to make incredible, life-changing novels. This can inspire, challenge and motivate students in a number of ways.

It explores different cultures and traditions

A lot of stories are written across the globe and it’s an important way of helping your child become aware of other aspects of the world. Students will get the chance to read about cultures from across the globe that helps them become aware of their own daily struggles, their habits and interesting traditions. This naturally builds a child’s awareness of cultural norms, how they can support others, and become accepting of different cultures.

Allows your child to build up their writing skills

A big portion of school life is down to the many essays we all have to write and put together. It’s important that your child is aware of how much English Literature will help with this; they’re getting used to the demand of essay writing in exams and how much they will be asked to write in the future. Many exams rely on students writing essays to develop their point or argument, which requires a lot of analysis.

Helps a child with their analytical skills

At some point, we will all need to know how to read a room and how to analyse what is happening around them. Reading literature will help students know what’s happening in the story and how they can build their awareness of different emotions and feelings. Authors cleverly put together these scenarios that allow us to feel and think in certain ways, which is great for storytelling.
