Top Tips for Helping Your Child Make New Friends – Making friends can feel overwhelming for some children and there are a number of reasons why that could be. Your child is naturally shy, or they have struggled to form a friendship before; they might be moving to a new area and have to make new friends again. There’s a lot of circumstances to consider, and it’s part of their learning to enjoy making new friends and form solid relationships.

In this guide from an International Sixth Form we take a look at the ways you can help your child make new friends and build on important friendships.

Make New Friends – Show your child respect

While you may think your child won’t make a friend through you, they will learn almost all of their behavioural skills from you. This is where your child has the opportunity to converse with you and gain those conversational aspects that a friendship is built on. To help with that, it’s important to show your child respect and care.

The more they are able to converse with you and see how much respect you give them, the likelihood this will be passed on to the children that they talk to. It makes your child more likely to make new friends this way.

Make New Friends – Provide a secure environment for them to learn in

A safe and secure environment means a child is more likely to explore new ways of talking to other people and having fun as well. A child isn’t going to know what will come up in real life situations, but you can make them feel more confident through activities at home. It’s a good chance to let your child know that they can try whatever they like to communicate better at home. Think of it as a trial run with your child to see what they pick up.

Make New Friends – Address your child’s behaviour

Your child isn’t going to fully know how to behave right away. This is where your child will begin to learn from you about how to address people, how to use their manners, and much more. If your child is behaving poorly then it’s time to address that and talk to them about how best to react and converse with others without causing further harm. It’s important to show your child how they will make friends in the easiest ways, which won’t be by being rude or disrespectful.

A lot of approaches will come naturally to your child and it’s important to see them progress as they get older. Finally, you will see your child have a nice friendship circle to create lasting memories with. You would be surprised how long a friendship can last throughout their school lives and it’s why schools will encourage this behaviour early on, too.
