5 Activities to Help Boost Your Child’s Vocabulary – Having a broad range of vocabulary can benefit children with regards to their general comprehension, reading, writing, and speaking skills. As you can imagine, expanding their dictionary will help them across school, not only in English but subjects like history, RE and so many more where they are expected to understand literature and produce essays. We’ve partnered with a prep school in Potters Bar to share 5 activities that you can work through to boost your child’s vocabulary.

Help Boost Your Child’s Vocabulary – Word of The Day

Tools like Word of the Day can be very effective. They introduce children to one new word every day and can help your child to add 365 more to their vocabulary. As they can be installed on their devices, they will be sure to remember. To teach them how to use the words, run through examples of how they’re used and encourage your child to use them in their day to day.

5 Activities to Help Boost Your Child's Vocabulary

Help Boost Your Child’s Vocabulary – Create a Word Wall

To ensure that every new word they’ve added to their dictionary isn’t forgotten, you can create a word wall that they can visually view in their room. This will act as a reminder and allow them to see how far they’ve come with their literacy. Also, to reinforce this, you can get them to write a few sentences using the words they’ve just learned.

Help Boost Your Child’s Vocabulary – Make Reading a Priority

Reading is the fastest way for children to learn new words. When reading they will be exposed to hundreds, if not thousands which will help them grow their vocabulary and learn their spellings. The context they are used in will help them learn more about how to use them in their work. If not directly reading themselves, you can read to them and build their familiarity.

Help Boost Your Child’s Vocabulary -Help with Spellings

Children are ordinarily set spellings to revise as a part of their English homework each week and are tested on them. You can help your child in learning their spellings by practising together and preparing them ahead of their spelling tests using techniques like look, cover, write, check.

Help Boost Your Child’s Vocabulary- Diversify Your Vocabulary

Mixing up the words that you use and using more sophisticated language can help your child to learn new words and write at a more advanced level. They will pick up on the words through conversation and will naturally learn to do the same.

These are just a few of the ways that you can help your child. Slowly as their vocabulary grows, you will see a positive impact on their grades.
