Working well in teams is going to be a large element in your child’s life, from school and working amongst peers to more professional settings in future careers. Having the chance to work well in a team setting from a young age will give your child a lot more skills to pick up.
This is important as it can be quite an overwhelming experience, if they have not encountered working amongst others before. The good news is, there are many ways you can do this at home. For example, if your child is already an older sibling, you could introduce these skills by working together to get things done. Below is a guide that will show you the best way to raise a team player from a young age.
1, Start Small – Team Player
Heading straight into the deep end when teaching a child anything, is always a big stretch for them. There are many ways that you can introduce your child to the values of working well in a team, which is why it is best to start off small. You could begin by completing activities with your child such as video games or board games.
Sticking to activities that your child already engages well in, will help them understand the idea of teamwork better. In pairs, allow your child the opportunity to make their own decisions in agreement with you. The idea is to help them work on decision-making and critical thinking skills. From here, you can move onto working on practical activities such as painting or baking a cake.
2, Show your child how to communicate – Team Player
The tasks of teaching a child how to speak and read is a common practice amongst all. However, teaching a child how to use these skills and communicate effectively is usually lost in other practices, meaning many children never really understand the best method to communicate to others in. Communication is one of the most vital skills your child will need to attain, especially when it comes to working in teams. Teach your child how to communicate when they identify issues within a team. Similarly, if your child is unhappy with a decision that has been made on their behalf, show them the right way to communicate their opinion.
Building the skills needed to be a great team player won’t happen overnight. It requires, time, effort and patience until children understand it.
