Exploring the UK by car offers you a great way to see and experience the best the country has to offer. Road trips give a unique way to see the UK, one where you can theme your route to suit your own tastes. In June 2022, Chums polled 1,000 UK residents over the age of 45 to discover what they look for in a road trip. The results are enlightening and a reminder of the diversity in both scenery and culture that the UK has to offer. Chums have used this research to great effect and put together road trip itineraries to include the places we all should visit.
History
One thing this country has in abundance is the physical evidence of the UK’s rich historical past. With a historical bias, one of Chum’s itineraries starts its journey in Liverpool, home to an exciting and different museum experience. We are used to thinking of history and the buildings associated with it to be from hundreds of years ago, but Liverpool’s Western Approaches HQ Museum offers a fascinating look back less than 80 years to the secretive history of the Second World War.
The museum is set in an underground bunker the museum tells the story of the u-boat menace posed in the Atlantic and how we responded with an epic effort coordinated by Western Approaches command. Once your curiosity for modern history is quenched, Liverpool offers the opportunity to step back in time to the roman era just a stone’s throw away in the ancient city of Chester. Leaving Liverpool the road trip continues to illustrate England’s rich history, including Shakespeare’s birthplace and on to London with its many historical attractions.
Wildlife
The starting point of their wildlife itinerary is well chosen to reflect our national love and interest in wildlife. Aldochlay it a beautiful hamlet nestled on the banks of lock Lomond. The area is within The Trossachs National Park and offers the chance to see a large variety of wildlife. The park’s ancient forests are home to the red squirrel, a rare sight elsewhere in the UK. They share their environment with birds like the golden eagle and chestnut-coated pine marten.
Plan your trip with an eye to the seasons and you are likely to see endangered osprey on the shores of the loch. If you are an early riser, the dawn over the loch can offer the chance to see bats while hearing stags calls. While there you may notice the signs of beaver activity. On offer are Kayak and canoe tours which offer a great way to experience the wildlife the loch has to offer. The road trip then takes you on a diverse enthralling tour of the best wildlife the UK has to offer ending appropriately in Exmoor and in sight of the famous ponies that roam the vast moorland.
Landscapes
It’s no surprise Chums found our love of the great outdoors to be underpinned by the diverse landscapes the UK has to offer. In reflecting this, their natural scenery itinerary starts in Dorset, right in the Jurassic south coasts world heritage site. The natural limestone arch of Durdle Door, formed by the sea’s erosion of the limestone rock gives a visual reminder of the layers of rocks beneath our feet. The coastline in this area erodes and gives up its fossil treasures that can be picked up from the beaches making up the Jurassic coast. Moving forward in their itinerary the road trip will give you the opportunity to go underground in the Cheddar Gorge to see its stalactites and experience a glimpse of England’s subterranean, then a welsh waterfall and the highest mountain in England. in Dorset.

Chums are onto something here with a carefully planned itinerary for your road trip that includes the best experiences throughout.
