Raising a polite child is very important to their development throughout their lives. It will help them in a lot of areas, of which will grant them support and can be seen as trusted in the eyes of others. Here is how you can raise a polite child.

How to Raise a Polite Child

Role model politeness

Being polite can only be achieved if a child knows what it looks like. This means you should be showing your child how to be polite through the many tasks and responsibilities you will have to pick up on a regular basis. If you see an opportunity to be polite to a member of staff at a cafe with your child, as an example, then do it. This can show to your child how they can replicate the same kinds of behaviour.

Curb bad behaviour

Poor behaviour can cause a lot of issues for children if it is not controlled early on. This is where raising a child that knows how to be polite can be very useful. When you see your child misbehaving it’s a good opportunity to talk to them about why they were behaving that way and what you can do to make sure it doesn’t happen again. Talk them through their feelings and get a better understanding of what is concerning them, and what could be causing this change in behaviour. Use them as learning opportunities, not times where you are scolding your child.

Praise your child when they are polite

Naturally seeing your child develop an understanding of kindness and politeness can make any parent feel warm inside. It’s therefore important to keep highlighting to them that you have taken notice of their kind-hearted nature and what it can mean for their personal development. So, compliment them every time they perform an act of kindness, or are polite to someone that they know or even someone they have just met. Continue doing this so that your child knows that this is the right thing to do.

Show your child examples of politeness in popular media

A lot of child-based TV programmes are educational and will teach your child about an important life lesson within each episode they watch. That alone can help your child visualise how to be polite in small ways, but also new ways they hadn’t yet thought about. When you see these examples occur on the TV, you could easily point them out to your child so that they know what to look for.

Being polite helps a child not only get further through life without as many hiccups, but it also helps them learn how to effectively communicate with others. From teachers, members of the public and family members – politeness is required to complete many tasks and to receive a reward in return.
