What Are My Child’s Options After GCSEs? – GCSEs provide the perfect stepping stone and give children access to a world of opportunities. Once they finish school they can either continue in full time education, or work part time whilst working towards a professional qualification in a specific field. To learn more about the options they have available after their GCSEs, here’s some guidance from a private school in Bath.
After GCSEs – Apprenticeships and T-Levels
Work experience is invaluable. It teaches children about the world of work and allows them to build transferable and industry-specific skills. Apprenticeships and T-levels are quite similar in that sense as they both involve the completion of a work placement whilst studying. The key difference is that there are fewer working hours with a T-level and that they are unpaid, whereas apprentices must be paid a base apprentice rate. T-levels are also the equivalent of three A levels but focus on vocational skills.
After GCSEs – A-Levels
A Levels are a good option for those unsure as to what they want to do. Students typically study between 3 and 4 which allows them to deepen their understanding of a broader range of subjects and helps keep their doors open. They are however exam-heavy, so is something that your child may want to consider before making a decision.
After GCSEs – BTECs
BTECs are also A level equivalents that provide access to similar opportunities. In comparison BTECs involve fewer exams and tend to have a coursework element. If your child struggles with exams, they may be a good alternative.
After GCSEs – Career Prospects
Each of the options above have the potential to lead to rewarding and successful careers. Apprenticeships can be studied at various levels, right up to level 7 which is the equivalent of a master’s degree.
After GCSEs – Things to Consider
One thing your child will need to think about before choosing their options is what they want to do longer-term. It may be that they need a specific degree and require A levels to get on to their desired course, although more and more universities are accepting BTECs and vocational courses.
After GCSEs – Carry Out Research
To help them make the right choice, we recommend doing research. Take a look at the career they wish to pursue and the requirements they must meet, as well as what each of the courses they’re considering involve. College open/taster days are an excellent way to get a feel of a course and give children the opportunity to discuss their options with teaching staff.
