The internet is very much a part of our everyday lives and as such, it stands to reason that children are going to want to use it too. When they’re younger and simply want to watch videos on YouTube life is much simpler, but as they get older and want to discover more of what the internet has to offer it’s important to teach your children about internet safety.

People Aren’t Always Who They Say They Are

One of the most important lessons that children can learn is that people online aren’t always who they say they are. In fact, it is wise to assume that people they are talking to are not who they say they are and even if they are, you should take everything they say with a pinch of salt. Social media for example tends to be people sharing the highlights of their day rather than the bad points, so comparing your life to them isn’t a sensible move. Instead, keep an open mind and be wary of who you are talking to.

They Can Only Use The Internet with Permission

Although the internet is considered essential for many things, it is important for your children to understand that they can only use the internet with your permission – this means only accessing it on devices you have said are okay, at times of day you say are okay and to access websites that you are likely to be happy that they are accessing. That way you can feel more considering that they are using the internet in a responsible way and are keeping themselves safe online.

Never Share Details

Children should be told that under no circumstances should they share details online with someone they do not know in real life – this includes things like phone number, surname and school. Encourage communication and as such, if your children do feel that they want to share these details or progress an online friendship to meeting up in real life that they do this only after talking to you and getting your permission and that you approach any scenarios like this together.

As well as always having your children’s logins, talking to them about their internet use is essential, so keep the lines of communication open as much as possible. If you have any ideas on things to teach your children about internet safety then we’d love to hear them.
