My Victory Over MOTs – The MOT test can be a daunting experience for many, especially when you’re facing financial struggles. The anxiety of potentially failing the test alongside the looming cost of repairs makes passing the MOT an uphill battle.
My Victory Over MOTs
Over the years, I’ve given the MOT a couple of times and unfortunately, never passed it on the first go. Yet, I was always able to scrape by in my second or third retest.
There was one occasion where it seemed that the universe was almost against me and my passing the MOT test. My finances were depleted, my car wasn’t cooperating and the expiry date of my MOT certificate was rapidly growing closer and closer. Nonetheless, I persevered, did what needed to be done and fortunately, my story had a happy ending.
This is a tale of victory, a tale of payday loans and MOTs and the story of how I went against the odds and came up on top.

A Tale of Woe
It all began with a single message; a reminder from the local MOT testing centre in Northampton that the MOT certificate for my vehicle would be expiring soon.
Typically, this wouldn’t be a big deal, I’d just drive on down to the testing centre and let my vehicle take care of the rest. However, during that month, I had been experiencing some major engine trouble and found my car refusing to start on multiple occasions. I kept dismissing the issue as nothing major that I would take care of eventually, but my negligence seemed to have caught up to me.
Passing the MOT in Northampton is challenging enough, but doing it with my car in its current state, simply impossible. I speak from experience. With the tiniest sliver of hope, I very foolishly attempted to take the test with my car in its present state, only for it to perform miserably.
The timing of this reminder could not have been worse. I had just blown through the last of my emergency fund the previous week due to an unexpected family crisis.
With limited funds, a broken-down vehicle and an MOT test I needed to pass rapidly approaching, all hope seemed lost.
Gearing Up for the Battle
With the certificate expiration date drawing closer, I was running out of both time as well as options on what I could do. I was discussing the situation with some close friends of mine when one of them hesitantly brought up the idea of taking out a payday loan for the car repairs.
I will admit that I quickly shot down the idea at the time, I’d heard too many horror stories about people being unable to make the repayments on time. However, when I returned home, I began to reconsider the idea.
I looked up payday loans online and began to research my options. Upon closer inspection, I seemed to have misjudged them. There were many different types of payday loans available, each with unique and mostly fair terms and conditions.
I spent a good amount of time going over various payday loan websites, confirming their legitimacy and deciding the exact amount I would require before finally making my choice.
Once I received the funds I needed from my payday loan, I immediately took my car to the nearest garage and had a mechanic have a look at it. After a day’s inspection, the mechanic informed me that my engine would need to be replaced entirely.
Now, I had two options for how to go about this replacement – I could either have the garage source and replace the engine themselves or I could look for the part I needed online and possibly find it at a more affordable price.
Finding car parts online in the UK is not for the faint of heart; it took days of searching before I finally came across the exact part my car required. After reconfirming it was the correct engine for my car model, I ordered it.
In just the span of one and a half weeks, I had gone from an almost hopeless situation to having a properly functioning vehicle and a chance at passing the MOT.
One Last Shot
The reason the MOT is difficult to pass largely revolves around its thorough and comprehensive nature.
During this test, every key component of your car is evaluated and tested to ensure it meets the proper standards for “roadworthiness”. From brakes to engines to windscreens and lights, no car part goes unchecked.
I do understand why MOTs are important, they confirm that your vehicle has met important safety and environmental standards required by the law.
By receiving your MOT certificate, you can ensure your car is safe to drive and that it’s producing minimal carbon emissions. As a result, MOT tests help make driving much safer for both passengers and pedestrians.
As I drove my car into the test centre, I was beyond nervous and desperately hoping that my efforts had paid off. I’d even looked up reasons why people fail MOTs online and double-checked everything just to be safe.
After dropping off my car, I was a nervous wreck for the next 24 hours. In a funnily similar way to how this entire saga began, it also ended with a message congratulating me on passing the MOT test and asking me to collect my car later that week.
I was absolutely ecstatic, I was able to get my MOT as well as pay for the car repairs I needed to get my car back into shape. Reinvigorated with happiness and determination, I set up my new goal – working tirelessly to make the repayments for my payday loan and become debt-free as soon as I could.
In Conclusion
It’s been well over three years since this series of incidents occurred and I am glad to report that I was able to pay off my payday loan within 6 months of taking it. Additionally, I’ve since passed every MOT test with flying colours (on my first attempts too!).
While I will not say that I’m glad my car broke down all those years ago, I do feel that the whole experience was extremely enlightening. Not only was I able to see payday loans in a new light, but I also learnt about the importance of regular car maintenance and the unexpected impacts of ignoring car issues.
I no longer have any issues regarding money or MOTs and for that, I am immensely grateful. If you ever struggle with car troubles or financial difficulties, take comfort in knowing that you do have options to pull yourself out of them and work towards a better future.
