Raise a Confident Child – Confidence in children is something integral to a child’s growth. They’re able to pick up a lot more tasks as a result, and it gives them plenty of ways for them to grow, understand complex decisions, work on their problem solving and more. Here in a guide from an independent school in Hertfordshire, we take a look at what parents can do to raise a confident child throughout their lives.
Raise a Confident Child
Try out a range of problem solving activities
Having a level of experience when it comes to solving problems is what your child should be well versed in from a young age. There are a lot of different activities you can try with your child to test themselves, such as working on specific questions in their homework, or playing board games. Let them fall into sticky situations sometimes and see how they can react; if they can manage to overcome it then they’re gradually learning, but never force them into an uncomfortable place.
Show your child how you handle difficult situations
Part of building confidence is knowing what to do when you’re encountering something awkward, unknown or even scary. Children won’t know straight away what they can do in every situation, but they can follow from what their parents do. Try to model what you would do if you were in a tricky place and how you would handle it, see if your kids can also mimic your actions as a result.
Remind your child about the effort made, and not necessarily the end goal
What’s important is that your child has a go at what they’re doing and they’re not entirely worried about the performance. What they’re trying to do is more important than the actual result, as they’re still figuring things out that they can try and test. It’s more about trial and error than anything else.
An example you can try is when your child is trying out a new hobby for interest for the first time. They are bound to make mistakes throughout their time, but this can also motivate them to do really well in picking up their new skills. The more times they’re able to practice their skills, the greater the chances they’re able to figure out where they can improve.
It’s important that you praise your child whenever they’re doing something for themselves, as opposed to whenever they do really well in a task or achievement. They will then feel more motivated to do their work and succeed in their goals.
