Maths can be a tough subject to master, but there are thankfully a lot of ways we can help our children with their skills in maths and how it can give them a lot more confidence. School life isn’t just about how well children do in one particular subject, it’s about how they can seek out help where they need it. Maths may be a tough area for your child, so here are some top tips you can use to help them with their maths skills.

Use physical activities to demonstrate how maths can be used

Sports is a good way to show your child how maths can be used in a different way. For example, start small by counting the number of footballs on a pitch. Then add in multipliers and times tables to get them thinking in a different way. Keep them on their toes as they explore different ways to work on their maths skills.

Try modern solutions

We’re at a good time in our lives where modern technology can help us all with managing problems better. Start by using some common games you may find on your smartphone or tablet to get your child engaged. You can also use online games to work on a child’s understanding of maths or further development of their skills.

Go back to basics

We all have our own strengths and weaknesses. There’s no shame in developing skills that bring a child back to those initial building blocks. Use this time to help your child remember what’s important when it comes to maths and rely on what you learn from a very young age. If it helps your child learn to get to grips with maths better this way, then why not try it? It’ll definitely give your child the chance to remind themselves of the skills they already have and how they can build on them.

Use daily objects as a way of calculating

Using eggs, spoons, books, and other everyday items are a good way to help your child get to grips with counting and sums. Get them used to counting together with you and even singing along to songs to get them to remember these moments.

Appreciate its importance for your child – it may seem trivial but your child is getting to grips with the impact that these little things can do for a kids’ learning. That, and it takes your child away from a worksheet or book that can be quite boring for them.
