Although living with older relatives might not be something you have planned for, it is something that more of us are opting to do. The truth is that the rising costs of care mean that not everyone can afford to live independently when their needs get a little greater, which is why living with relatives helps. If you’re planning to live together once again here are some tips to help make life a little easier on everyone.
Communication
For any group of people living together, communication is must if you want things to go smoothly. Everyone has their own way of doing things and whilst there is often no right or wrong way, it can clash if you move in with someone who opts to do things different to you. The best way to get around this is to talk through your needs, their concerns and everything else about living together so everything is out in the open and you can work through any tricky parts together.

What Are Their Needs?
If an older relative is moving in with you then the chances are this is because they have tasks they can’t do themselves or extra needs. It is worth considering these before you take the plunge of living together to ensure that you can help and that you have everything in place to do so. For example, you may find that they struggle with the stairs or getting in and out of the bath. Thankfully Age Co Mobility have a range of products and tonnes of advice so research before you move in together is easy.
Respect Each Other’s Space
It can take a little while to get used to living together and that is perfectly natural. Where possible do what you can to give each other space; which isn’t always easy in a small home. For example, can you go out while they have a friend over or could you encourage them to see friends so you can have time home alone?
It’s definitely possible for things to work, as long as you work together and all put in effort to respect each other’s needs. If you have any tips for living with older relatives we’d love you to share them below
